Optical Layer Monitors

Optical Layer Monitoring

Optical layer monitors provide deep insight into the health of an optical communications link by extracting and analysing key signal parameters at the wavelength layer.

These monitors operate in-line or via optical taps, measuring parameters such as optical power, optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR), wavelength drift, gain tilt, and channel spectral shape.

Unlike traditional performance monitoring which infers issues at higher layers, optical layer monitoring provides early detection of degradation before bit errors appear.

Technical Principles

Proximion develops bespoke optical layer monitoring solutions using a combination of broadband photonic filtering, optical tap couplers, and high-speed photodetectors to sample small portions of the signal spectrum. By comparing the tapped signal against reference, the monitor computes OSNR and channel-specific metrics.

Advanced units may integrate optical spectral analysers (OSA) or micro-optics to resolve individual DWDM channels. The system can feed data to the control plane or network management system for closed-loop control.

Differentiating Features

  • High dynamic range: Capable of handling strong to weak channels without saturation.
  • Fine spectral resolution: To detect subtle drifts or crosstalk spectral tails.
  • Real-time operation: Millisecond to microsecond updates to support fast feedback.
  • Compact, modular form: Fits into edge nodes, ROADMs, and central offices.
  • Telemetry integration: Metrics are delivered via standard protocols (e.g. NETCONF, OpenConfig, telemetry streams).

Applications

  • Ensuring secure networks. By measuring the power and quality of the optical signal, one can detect and monitor any unwanted intrusions on the network.
  • Predictive maintenance: detecting amplifier aging, filter drift, or fiber degradation early.
  • Automated gain and tilt adjustment in ROADM networks.
  • OSNR-based routing decisions.
  • Channel health trending over network lifespan.
  • Performance verification after upgrades.
