Dispersion Compensation

State of the art

Proximion offers the world’s only FBG-based continuous Dispersion Compensation Modules (DCMs). Tens of thousands of units are deployed in networks worldwide, today compensating for dispersion in links that spans more than six laps around the globe.

The same technology is used in a Proximion Dispersion Emulation Module (DEM), which can be customised to create the chromatic dispersion effects of a specific long fiber network. Such a custom DEM allows a network designer to develop and test the complex DSP algorithms needed for chromatic dispersion management on such networks.

Insights about DCM

How our FBG technology works

Dispersion compensation utilizing FBGs is based on the introduction of wavelength‐specific time delays through the use of a precisely chirped FBG.

Our ultra-long FBGs is inscribed with our versatile and proprietary grating writing technique that gives us unparalleled possibilities.

Mixed 10G and 100G

When adding 100G coherent channels to legacy 10G networks it is a major risk that the new 100G channels are distorted to the level that signal transmission is impossible.

Our technology makes it possible to upgrade any dispersion compensated network to a mixed +100G coherent network.

Best of both worlds

Our products are the only ones that combine all the benefits of the FBG and DCF technology. Taking advantage of both full band and channel plan independent compensation.

Fiber Bragg Gratings design knowledge for DCM

Ultra low loss

The low loss enables a higher degree of freedom when optimizing your system with respect to reach and performance.

In longer spans, it is a major cost saver reducing the amount of amplification needed with a factor of 3 to 5 compared to DCF.

Perfect slope match

Our FBG-based DCMs can be designed to perfectly mimic the dispersion slope characteristic of any given fiber type.

We guarantee a residual dispersion of less than 2% compared to a value often higher than 10% with DCF. Low residual dispersion is crucial when you decide to migrate to higher bit rates.

No latency

With virtually zero latency, our FBG-based DCMs can reduce your link latency up to 10 to 20 percent. It is perfectly suited for high-speed networks supporting low-latency services.

Continuous compensation

No matter what your link dispersion looks like, there is a solution with our continuous FBG DCMs. So whether you are using G.652 or G.655 fiber, or have a full-band terrestrial or a banded submarine solution, you will have the possibility to have zero dispersion over all your channels and even in-between channels.

The continuous solution also allows for seamless upgrade to higher bit rate, channel count , or even change of channel plan.

Space efficient

Small form factor but full-band dispersion compensation. The FBG design enables an immense space saving resulting in substantial OPEX and CAPEX-related savings.

Zero nonlinear effects

In a DWDM environment, non-linear effects limit the number of wavelengths per fiber and/or channel spacing. By using FBG DCMs with zero non-linearities, you don’t add any limitations to your system as is the case using DCF. FBG DCMs have actually proved to even decrease the problem with non-linearities in coherent systems.

“Non-linearities is the #1 parameter, just before dispersion, that determines the capacity limit of a long haul DWDM system. ”
